What Is TESA, TESE, PESA, And MESA Procedure For Male Infertility?

All About TESA, TESE, PESA And MESA

by SalenaMartine

At the time of ejaculation, men produce semen fluid which generally contains sperm in it. Although sometimes, with the help of semen analysis tests, the doctor finds out an absence of sperm in the fluid. This happens due to some blockage in the tubes or some other reasons, as the presence of fructose indicates that there is sperm in the body, but it is not presenting itself during ejaculation. This is one of the causes of male infertility.

But do not lose hope; with the advancement in technology, it is much easier to find the solution. You can still conceive and have a successful pregnancy with the help of some test-tube baby technique in an IVF Centre in Punjab. The sperm could be collected from the side of the production and can be fertilized with the egg in the laboratory. The whole procedures vary from each other but are commonly known as sperm retrieval procedures (SRP).

Some of the various SRP methods are – TESA. TESE, MESA, PESA.

Types Of SRP (Sperm Retrieval Procedures)

  • TESA

Testicular sperm aspiration (TESA) is a process of TESA(Testicular Sperm Extraction). In this technique, the doctor conducts the procedure with the help of needle insertion in the testes, which is a place where sperm are produced. Then the doctor retrieves tissues and fluid from the testes by a vacuum which generates negative pressure. The tissues collected are processed from where the sperm cells which are extracted are used for fertilization, wherein the doctor injects the selected sperm directly into the egg; the process done is known as ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection). The whole process of TESA can also be used for another method, IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) of conceiving, wherein the doctor fertilizes the egg and the sperm in the Petri dish in a lab in a Test Tube Baby Centre In Punjab.

  • PESA

Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) is a method that does not require any surgical incision. With the help of a small needle, the doctor passed it through the scrotum’s skin directly into the epididymis head, and the fluid was retrieved.

The epididymis is a coiled tube that is used for storing and also carrying sperm via testes to the vas deferens/ ductus in the male reproductive system. The sperm matures as it passes through the epididymis so as to fertilize the female cell in the embryo as it reaches the ductus/vas deferens.

After that, the sperm or fluid collected is then prepared for either method- ICSI or IVF.

  • MESA

MESA (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration) is a technique that is used in conditions such as obstructive azoospermia (in this situation, there is an absence of spermatozoa in the ejaculate). This whole process involves an incision of a single tubule which is done by dissecting the epididymis. Then the doctor draws out the fluid which overflows from the epididymis tubule. In this method, it can sometimes lead to contamination by the blood cells because of the large number of vessels in the epididymis. This could directly affect the sperm fertilizing capacity in the process of IVF.
