Scaffolding Materials – From Bottom to Top
Sole Plate: This can be made of timber, concrete or metal and acts as a spreader to distribute load from a standard or face plate onto the ground.
Base Plate: This metal plate with a spigot helps distribute load from a standard, transom or other load-bearing tube. Adjustable jacks are often used at the bottom of the standard for maximum leveling adjustments.
Standard: A vertical or near-vertical tube that carries the weight of the scaffold and transmits the load to the supporting structure.
Ledger: This horizontal tube is typically fixed parallel to the face of a structure, acting as a support for footlock transoms, tie tubes, and ledger braces. It usually connects to adjacent standards.
Scaffolding Planks: Manufactured scaffold planks are used for the work platform. At least two or more planks placed side-by-side are required to create a secure work surface.
Toe Board and Upstand: These are located at the edge of the platform to prevent materials or workers from falling off.
Guard Rail: This member is incorporated to stop people from falling from the platform or accessway ladder.
Ladder: A piece of equipment with bars or steps between two operating lengths of wood or metal, used for climbing up and down.
Bracing: Diagonal tubes placed with respect to the vertical or horizontal members of the scaffold. They are fixed to these members to provide stability.
Joint Pin: An expanding fitting placed in the core of a tube to connect one tube to another.

Transom: This tube spans across ledges to form support for boards or units this create the working platform or to connect outer standards to inner standards.
Bridging: A metal fender that fills the gap between the guardrail and toe board, sometimes incorporating one or both of these components.
Couplers: These fittings hold the tubes together. The most common types are couplers and swivel couplers. There are five basic types in total: right-angle couplers, putlog couplers, swivel couplers, sleeve couplers, and parallel couplers.
Putlog: A horizontal tube with a flatted end that rests on a ledger to support the working platform.
Reveal Tube: This tube is fixed between two opposite surfaces using a threaded fitting or placed across an opening in a structure to form an anchor point for the scaffold.
Tie (Tie Assembly): These components are attached to an anchorage point on the structure, typically formed around a part of it or wedged/screwed into it with a tie tube. They serve to secure the scaffold to the structure.
Scaffold Tag: This is a simple way to indicate whether a scaffold is safe to use and provides other information to prevent overloading.
Outriggers: A supported scaffold consisting of a platform resting on outriggers and beams that project beyond this wall or face of the building or structure.
